Well, my dad’s not dead (HAIL! ERIS!), yet. Which is good. He still has covid, and his legs are still swollen with fluid because of the fucked ventricle in his heart, but this isn’t a blog about my dad, it’s not even a blog about me. It’s a blog about Eris, by Eris.

In between the chaos of this week I’ve begun collating all the fragments from the notebooks, half-started paragraphs, bits of letters etc etc into one place. It’s total chaos but, I’m afraid, if you’re looking for something coherent then you’ve come to the wrong blog, and you’re looking for a different planet. Having a twitter account is handy, because anything Eris-related that crops up I just park there for later. Then, I can park it here after that. This week I posted a couple of pages from notebook 2, where I’d tried to amalgamate key themes associated with Eris, so I’m going to start by transcribing them. I’m not going to explain them - again, if you’re looking for answers, you’re in the wrong place. I haven't got a scooby mate.

This is an extract from an email I sent to the awesome Thomas Canfield, around the same time. Not only did he publish the first book about the astrological Eris (‘Yankee Doodle Discord: A Walk with Planet Eris through USA History', in 2010), as well as a superb exploration of the relationship between Pluto and Eris from the perspective of 800 years of human history (2018’s ‘Brother Pluto, Sister Eris: Aspects Between the Dwarf Planets’), he’s also a bloody nice bloke. I shall be returning to his pioneering work on Eris, and doing a more thorough exploration of everything he has to teach, as well as how my own work looking at aspects to Eris in terms of natal charts correlates with many of his findings about Eris from the perspective of Mundane Astrology. Anyway, this is the bit:

…One area I’m currently investigating is Discordianism (an absurdist, parody ‘religion’ formed in the early 1960s), which was based on the veneration of Eris. Another is my feeling that Eris energy is connected with the amygdala; and the way in which this vital, primeval part of the brain is now being manipulated by online marketing (“attention is the new oil…”). Additionally, there are several integral synchronistic events coinciding with the discovery of Eris which have yet to be fully explored: the launch of Facebook in February 2004, and youtube on February 14th 2005, are just two examples...

Moving on, here’s a half-arsed ‘prologue’ I began on June 21st 2021:

These are chaotic times. As I write, nearly four million people have died from the Coronavirus in the last 18 months. We don’t need to look at any planetary placements to predict that many more people are going to die in the days ahead. There are beacons of hope, in terms of vaccinations and declining mortality rates (in some countries, on some continents).

Amongst the panic, and despair, many people have found themselves asking: “When will things go back to normal?” While this question (and the emotions beneath it) are completely understandable, it betrays two inherent misconceptions:

1. That it is possible to “go back”.

2. That “normal” was something worth "going back" to.

During the last year, as various countries across the globe implemented different measures in order to combat the spread of the virus, billions of people found themselves stuck indoors, stuck to their sofas, and stuck to their screens. Our screens have become our source of news, as well as our source of distraction from the news. For those of us living alone, they have become our only medium for human interaction. Internet discourse has become more polarised than ever before (everyone deals with fear in their own ways) before; meanwhile conspiracy theories and disinformation continue to flourish (fake news travels three times as fast as actual news). Instances of domestic violence in the U.K. have rocketed. During the beginning of the pandemic US gun sales rose dramatically, and continue to do so (39% of American households now own guns, a dramatic rise from 32% in 2016). Running parallel with the gradual relaxations in lockdown

restrictions, there have been escalating cases of gun violence and mass shootings.

“What does any of this have to do with Eris?” you may well ask.

It has everything to do with Eris.

2021. Good times, this is to the good life. At the time of writing this blog the amount of reported deaths from the coronavirus is 6,145,441 (according to https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/). It will've risen by the time you read this, obvs. You know that feeling from watching the numbers on worldometers rise - that  feeling is your "Eris Centre".

None of what you’re about to read is ‘true’ as such. I mean, there’s going to be some ‘facts’ thrown about; but, you can use search engines just as well as me. Probably better. The following text will be mainly conjecture, a bit of pattern recognition, and what could be called instinct. It’s just what I think.

It is no coincidence that Eris was discovered while in Aries. Mythologically, Eris was the sister of Ares (Mars), and much of the internet discourse around Eris’ Astrological significance has been focused on the ‘warrior goddess’ archetype (originally Xena). But, while the underlying part of human consciousness that Eris deals with does involve Aries and Marshall shades, there are also Uranian, Neptunian. Plutonian and Mercurial, and sure as fuck Lunar elements to be considered. However, as we shall see, Eris stands in stark distinction to all the other planets too. There are multiple deities and archetypes, some already associated with the other planets (Kali = Pluto, Hecate & Medusa = Moon, specifically Waning Crescent - see: the unfathomably wise Demetra George's book Mysteries of the Dark Moon for further elucidation), which are no explicitly linked with Eris, but have profound overlap of characteristics. One such example is The Thunder, Perfect Mind; a fierce poem from a female voicee, which dates back to c.350 AD and was found as part of the Gnostic manuscripts called the Nag Hammadi Library/Codex in 1945. It's fucking rad, and sounds like a c.October 1962 Plath poem.

One simple way to introduce the core themes of the Erisian archetype is to look back through the other nine planets, and trace what characteristics they each share with Eris, and where they differ. Obviously, just as the planet has always been there, so has the archetype. The Greek Myths about Eris are well old. Not as old as the planet Eris itself, but well old. We just weren’t ready to properly see it yet. Or, we didn't think it important. 

Let’s start with the Sun. Eris is, at specific points in its orbit, further from the Sun than any other planet (by a considerable amount). Therefore, ‘as above, so below’, Erisian energy is about as far from our conscious ‘self-image’ as it’s possible to get. Erisian events are the kinds of experiences that are like a fist in the face from the collective un- sub- super- conscious. In fact, on occasion, they could well be an actual fist in the face. Eris gives no fucks. Eris events are often entirely ‘out of character’; volcanic eruptions, exploding nail bombs; the kind of feral acts of lashing out that you see in crowds crushing each other to death. Eris preaches no morals and shows no mercy. As part of her genius, insanely-info-packed (her mind is so quick, and she's so intuitive, that I have to transcribe them and re-read them to really get it all - then again, my mind is very slow and my brainbox is a fucking mess) set of insta videos titled 'Tarot Tuesday's - Eris', recorded on 29th September 2020 (good times...) Jessa Crispin gives a graphic example of the sort of arbitrary catastrophe of Eris events, saying: "you throw a stone out the window and it hits a baby on the head and a baby dies." Eris is bad things happening to good people, and vice versa. Eris is chaos for the sake of chaos.

And chaos is nothing new. 

(June 9th 2021 - a bit later on…)

Erisian events are the kinds of experiences where you find yourself asking yourself questions like: “Who the fuck actually am I? Who was that person, the person who just saw/experienced/perpetrated/did that? That was not anyone I recognise, and yet it came from inside me" On to the Moon.

The Moon is such an opaque, intangible and vast aspect of all our lives that, of course, we are going to be able to see Erisian energy in the library of associations with lunar phases (specifically the Waning Crescent), sign and house placements, aspects and transits… The principle area of lunar energy which is linked to Eris is that which is ‘transrational’ about the Moon. Additionally, there are karmic links integrally interwoven with the Lunar Nodes and, subsequently, aspects between Eris and the South Node (Ketu) and past life events which may effect our current life.

The Mercurial elements present in Eris have to do with information, but, more specifically ‘disinformation’. We live in a post-truth, deep-fake reality, where a majority of the population of the world spend more time staring at screens than they do at the sky. Eris thrives on conspiracy theories, and polarising discourse of every kind. The frightening exponential rate at which Artificial Intelligence is not only evolving, in and of itself, but also being used to ‘test run’ entire surveillance states is already with us. Of course, Mercury is a trickster, as is Eris. But, it's the intensity that distinguishes them. When Mercury is in Retrograde your phone might not work, a social media site (or three) might go down. When Eris is in Retrograde, your phone will burst into flames.

As for Venus, it is in the viciously distorted, infantisied, unreal imagery now called ‘female beauty’ which is where Eris shows up. Eris is viral; just like every a video of a teenage girl lip-syncing to some banal, over-compressed excuse for a song gets a million views in an hour on The Tick Tock - that is pure Eris energy right there.

Mars and Eris, well, their literally brother and sister! The commonly-used glyph for Eris is that of Mars, but with the arrow pointing down (there is still discord over the glyph though, which I fucking love. #ErisAF). In the Greek myth, Ares (Mars) was the brother of Eris, and they both revel in conflict, discord and all out violence and warlike carnage. However, whereas Marshall fire is often depicted as necessary conflict, in ‘fighting the good fight’ and being assertive (when it is wise to do so), there is no such sagacity with Eris. Eris violence is, to those who witness it and commit it, utterly devoid of meaning. It’s chaos for the sake of chaos; no ‘noble wars’, no ‘heroes’. It's some guy shooting Franz Ferdinand while ising a bicycle, and 40 million people dying. At the outbreak of World War 2 Eris was Trine Pluto. On September 11th 2001 Pluto hit the U.S.A.s Midheaven. 9/11 is another prime example of Eris energy - which Keiron Le Grice explores in his 2012 book Discovering Eris (consider the small act of Eris throwing the Apple of Discord amongst the wedding guests, and how it triggers the Trojan War - that kind of shit). The potential for the individual to cause vast and catastrophic strife is a hallmark of Eris.

On to Jupiter. Where the venn diagrams of Jupiter and Eris overlap is in the realms of expansion. However, as I have reiterated, Eris is Viral. Yes, there may be risks involved, but there’s no specific, tangible, meaningful ‘goal’ or 'vision' with Eris like there is with Jupiter. And, when Eris energy hits, the expansion is beyond overwhelming. An article written in 2018 stated that over 90% of the World's data was created in the last two years. Consider that for a minute. This, along with the exponential evolution of AI are both key examples of Eris energy exponentially increasing in society. The reason that the video of the cute cat was viewed by 20 million people is because the cat is cute.

These notes were written on May 6th 2021, under the heading ‘Eris & Uranus’; although I’m not really sure how much they actually have to do with Eris & Uranus at all:

• reality is agreed upon (neptune uranus - a radical shift in the dream of reality = discovery of electricity, end of colonial consciousness)
• end of gendered planets (moon and venus = women, men = everything else...) = gendered issues (end of patriarchy - capitalist feminism?!! see: Jessa Crispin)
• you could fit all the other asteroids inside Eris but she is 2/3 of the moon
• every structure in the sky has something to do with the structure of the mind
• thinspirration websits - warped competitiveness of Eris energy ways of seeing - "men act, women appear..." = obvious rage!
• the apple - myth jewel, food (scarcity) … Apple Mac, Discordianism:
• Principia Discordia - Chaos Magick - internet

The positive aspects of ambitious competitiveness is one of the more positive elements of Eris energy - people do better themselves (it's just that the extent to which instagram helps or hinders that process is negligible). Also, there's the sheer volume of freely available information which has never been so accessible. We have only scratched the surface, we spend our lives in the crevices of a giant library now (remember that David Bowie interview from 1999). We are slaves to algorithms which inherently polarise, because angry people click more. The extent to which our reality tunnels are shaped for us has never been so manipulated and maliable. Nuanced discourse (online, at least) is dead. Political satire is dead. The word dystopian has lost its meaning. Attention is currency. Bitcoin is currency. Fucking... Astrology is Bitcoin is currency! Uranus in Taurus. Pluto in Capricorn. Eris in Aries. 

Then there’s the darker side of the relentless and ruthless self-comparison provoked by The Net: 

• Paris = Zuck = cambridge analytica = tumpetytump = brexit
• Pluto = catastrophe & heat
• Uranus = chaos and revolution, inside both their orbits
• the divorce of sex and love
• the wounded femenine 
• eris + mercury = hypersexualised media, fox news, qanon...
• vicious competitiveness - the “innocent savagery” of animals - amygdala/reptilian brain
• internet = chaos + stimulation of dopamine - yuck/wow

Finally, here’s a bit about Eris & Pluto, written on May 18th 2021 (3 days after my birthday. Looking back, with the benefit of hindsight, I’m not sure how emotionally/mentally ‘well’ I was back then. I'm deffo worse now though, that's for sure):

Since Pluto was ‘discovered’ over 90 years ago, it’s astrological gravity has steadily revealed itself. As befits the god of Hell, Pluto’s lessons are invariably painful to learn. Yet, they are also transcendent (the Pluto buzz word is "transformation"). When you got nothing you got nothing to lose (Bob Dylan). The only way is up (Yazz & the Plastic Populaion, who later became Coldcut).

It was only in the 1980s and early 90s that Pluto’s real significance began to make itself felt, particularly through the work of evolutionary astrologers Jeffrey Wolf Green and Steven Forrest. the Plutonian (or ‘Plutocratic’) themes, of the unconscious, the shadow side of human behaviour, the archaic belief templates foisted upon us of unhealthy behaviour patterns, repeated lifetime after lifetime, abuse of every kind, the misery we hand on that deepens like a coastal shelf… you’re either working on your shit, or your shit is working on you. It’s wise to listen to what Pluto has to say (even though you won’t want to hear it).

So, when in August 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) downgraded the status of Pluto to that of “dwarf planet.” it must’ve made for some humorous astrological discourse on whether it was "ok to leave Pluto out of your chart", to ignore it… obviously not so. With astrology, it seems, size doesn’t matter. 

Why was it that Pluto is now considered a “dwarf planet” (planet of restricted size)? You guessed it. Eris is both larger and more dense than Pluto. One of the jewels in the mandala of synchronicities associated with the planet is that Eris cucked Pluto. Not only that, the discovery of Eris elevated Ceres to the same (dwarf planet) status. Which (if you take the work of Demtera George seriously, which, like, you really should) then this implicitly promotes Pallas Athene, Vesta and Juno to the same level of gravitas as all the other 'planets'. Then, there's whiny wounded Chiron too...
